Nilgiris, which mean "Blue mountains", is the meeting point of the two ghat ranges of the Sahayadri hills. The height of the hills of the Blue mountains vary from 2,280 to 2,290 meters, though the highest peak is the Doddabetta which stands 2,623 meter high. To the west to the Nilgiris, is the state of Kerala, on the north is Mysore and Coimbatore lies on the east and the south. The headquarters of Niligiri district is Ooty, a very popular hill station of South India.

The reason Nilgiris attract a large number of tourists every year is because of its magnificent hills, fantastic valleys and brilliant waterfalls. Moreover, there are lots of tea estates that add more to the beauty of the area. The pleasant weather all year long is also the major reason why tourist head to the hills in the summers.


The popular hill stations in Nilgiris are, Ooty also known as Udhagamandalam, Coonoor and Kotagiri. Ooty, the most popular hill station among these three, boasts of picturesque beauty along with many landmarks. The main attractions of this town are, the Botancial gardens and the Doddabetta peak.
Coonnor, the second popular hill station stands ata height of 1,858 meters above sea level. This town has many vantage points and Sim's Park, that attracts a lot of visitors.
The last but not the least is Kotagiri. It is 16 kms from ooty and stands at a height of 1,950 meters. Places of tourist ineterst in this hill station are the Elk falls, Kodanad Viewpoint and Catherine falls.
