One of the famous destinations around Ooty, Bandipur is renowned for the Bandipur National Park. The park is set amidst the scenic landscape of the gigantic Western Ghats, sprawling over an area of about 874.2 sq km. This famous tiger reserve in India was set up in the year 1931 by the Mysore Maharajas as their game resort. The park is home to several species of flora including Teak, Rosewood, Honne, Mathi, Bamboo and Sandal Trees. Apart from the tiger, other animals mainly seen in the park are the elephant, gaur, leopard, chital and sambar. The different species of avifauna found here include the peafowl, partridge, quail, hornbill and ibis. The best time to visit the Bandipur National Park is between the months of April and October.
